“Take heed, therefore, lest what is said in the Prophets come to pass: “'Behold, you scoffers, be astonished and perish; for I am doing a work in your days, a work that you will not believe, even if someone tells it.'” [Habakkuk 1:5] As they went out, the people begged that these things be told to them on the next Sabbath. And after the synagogue meeting ended, many Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who, as they spoke to them, exhorted them to continue in the grace of God. The following Saturday almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord. But when the Jews saw the crowd, they were filled with jealousy and began to contradict what Paul said, reviling him. And Paul and Barnabas spoke boldly, saying, “It was necessary that the word of God should first be spoken to you. Since you reject it and deem yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we turn to the Gentiles. For thus has the Lord commanded us, saying, “'I have made you a light to the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.'” [Isaiah 49:6] And when the Gentiles heard this, they began to rejoice and glorify the word of the Lord, and all who were appointed to eternal life believed. And the word of the Lord spread throughout the region. But the Jews incited the pious women of high rank and the leaders of the city, instigated the persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their district. But they shook off the dust from their feet against them and went to Iconium. And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.”
